Steve Jobs passed away yesterday, and I couldn’t help but join the chorus that was mourning him. Few public figures have affected the lives of artists as significantly and personally as Jobs. Even now, I’m writing a blog entry on an Apple computer, the same portal that allows me to create and publish comics for the world, instantly and without editorial restraint. How could I not be grateful for the man?

Men and women like Jobs have built the platforms where people like me can launch their dreams. Thanks to them, we live in the futures that science fiction once imagined. True, those futures don’t come without great existential burdens. But with them come instruments so flexible and boundless, we can physically manifest almost every spark of our imaginations. What a wondrous world.

Thanks, Steve, and thanks to you countless other innovators, for inviting us to live in the future.
